NY Knicks called OKC about Kristaps Porzingis

According to Ramona Shelburne of ESPN, the New York Knicks have engaged in trade talks with the Oklahoma City Thunder in regards to Kristaps Porzingis. However in the report, Ian Begley of ESPN  relays from a source that the Thunder simply “don’t have enough.”

It is unclear at this time what players or draft picks were mentioned in these talks.

While this news may be disappointing to Thunder fans, it is important to remember that Oklahoma City may not be in position to acquire a player like Porzingis.

The Knicks have been busy contacting teams in the top five of the 2017 draft lottery in regards to the seven foot-Latvian. Reports say the Knicks are looking for first round picks as well as starters in a potential deal.

Oklahoma City has a roster of talented young players with potential but little trade assets for a blockbuster deal like this.

Names like Enes Kanter, Victor Oladipo and even Steven Adams to go along with the Thunder’s 21st pick in the draft are the common assets mentioned in potential Oklahoma City trades. Kanter’s salary as well as his importance off the bench still presents a challenge in terms of moving him while Oladipo and Adams may be too valuable to the core of the team.

In the past, leaks of behind the scenes talks like this have been rare in Oklahoma City. Sam Presti has a reputation of running things close to the vest. At the 2015 trade deadline, the popular name was Brook Lopez only for Presti to acquire Kanter at the last second. At last year’s draft, no one knew of a Serge Ibaka swap for Oladipo and a lottery pick until Adrian Wojnarowski tweeted it.

The Thunder are trying. It is still uncertain whether they have the assets to be a true player to make a deal of this magnitude. Time will tell.
