Thunder Rank – #12 Steven Adams

Over the next 16 days, we’re going to be ranking the Thunder roster, 1-16. Each day we’ll reveal a new ranking and a player. #12 – Steven Adams

When doing this ranking thing, we’re left to a lot of our predictions and rankings are done on expectations. there are four players already ranked, below, three have actual N.B.A. experience, and the one was based off expectations. That’s where we are with Steven Adams.

One thing we do know about Steven Adams is that he will be a project. The big Kiwi from New Zealand is going to spend a lot of the upcoming season in Tulsa, learning the N.B.A. game, growing as a player. However, there is some real potential here. Adams showed some real moves in the Orlando Pro Summer League. He was able to attack the basket, while playing some defense.

Why Adams finishes so low in the #ThunderRank is the fact he is so raw. Only playing high-level organized basketball for fours years, as where most players on the Thunder have been playing for almost eight years heading into the N.B.A. He’s so inconsistent as a player, and learning the speed of the professional game seemed to be an issue, even during the Summer League. However, that’s where training camp comes into play. The ability to learn what organized professional basketball looks like and learning how players move will be imperative for Adams.

Despite being so raw and inconsistent, he’s still better already than Daniel Orton, our #15th ranked player. He has a better jump shot, and a better post game already. Defense is where Orton has Adams a little bit, but that will change pretty quickly. Expect Daniel Orton, if he makes the team, to start in Tulsa over Adams for a bit. Then we’ll see Adams overtake Orton within a few games I bet.

I don’t want to say this is the worst that Adams could finish, because the fact that when the Thunder draft a center, they haven’t exactly turned out to be all Shaq-like. Cole Aldrich and Byron Mullins are lucky to even still be in the league at this point of their careers. So, the jury is still out on Adams, for mostly everyone.
