Thunder Rank – #7 Jeremy Lamb

Over the next 16 days, we’re going to be ranking the Thunder roster, 1-15. Each day we’ll reveal a new ranking and a player. We’d enjoy your feedback by using the hashtag “#ThunderRank” on Facebook or Twitter. Alright, alright, you’re all waiting.. here it is! PS: Grant Jerrett is ineligible for the list due to he remains unsigned with the Thunder.

#7 – Jeremy Lamb

Jeremy Lamb

A lot of excitement surrounds Jeremy Lamb this year. The 21-year-old Thunder guard is coming into his second year in the league, and fans are expecting a much bigger role for Lamb during the upcoming season. Many look for Lamb to assume the position of sixth man for the Thunder.

There’s a lot to like about Lamb’s game. His silky smooth jumper, with a fairly high and quick release, is his biggest weapon as a scorer. Able to get shots on the move or spotting up off the ball, Lamb will be a capable scorer off the bench.

While it’s hard to rank a player that we haven’t really seen play a lot, Lamb’s numbers in Tulsa last year were solid. In 21 games for the 66‘ers, Lamb shot 49 percent from the field and averaged 21 points per game. His three-ball isn’t bad, but after shooting 35.2 percent from beyond the arc, there’s obviously room for improvement. Lamb is also terrific at creating his own shot, something Kevin Martin struggled with at times.

Lamb is something we are used to in O.K.C.: a young body with a lot of talent. But like most players, Lamb has a lot to improve on, and new wrinkles to add to his game. As a fantastic free throw shooter (nearly 90 percent), Lamb needs to attack the rim more often. There’s no reason for Lamb to not translate his natural athleticism into some easy points for O.K.C..

Also, on a team that preaches defense, Lamb is going to need to improve defensively if he’s to get important minutes for the Thunder. It’s not just the “dazed and bored” look in his eyes, Jeremy Lamb has the tendency to lose focus on defense. If he can give consistent effort and get a bit stronger, Lamb will be more than capable of crunch time minutes at some point during the season.

Unlike Perry Jones III in our previous rankings, the Thunder are actually counting on Jeremy Lamb to give them a boost this season. The Thunder’s lack of free agency activity is a sign that they’re ready to trust Lamb. While I don’t think there’s a ton of pressure on Lamb this season, a lot of the Thunder’s success may ride on his development.
