Thunder Rank #14 – Ryan Gomes

Over the next 16 days, we’re going to be ranking the Thunder roster, 1-16. Each day we’ll reveal a new ranking and a player. We’d enjoy your feed back by using the hashtag “#ThunderRank” on Facebook or Twitter. Alright, alright, you’re all waiting.. here it is! PS: Grant Jerrett is ineligible for the list due to he remains unsigned with the Thunder.

#14 – Ryan Gomes

When the Thunder signed Ryan Gomes earlier this month, it came as a bit of a shock for the casual Thunder fan. However, if you’re not so casual, you know that he worked out for the Oklahoma City Thunder twice before signing the one-year agreement. Still, you’re surprised why this even happened.

Gomes spent the last season overseas playing professional basketball, since he wasn’t really wanted in the N.B.A. I know what I just said. There was very little interest, so he went over seas. He didn’t play a lot there, just 10 games, eight for the german team in their league, and two in the euro-cup, the basketball version. Gomes returned back to the United States hoping to get picked up by a team, but that never happened.

Why did that happen? It’s tough to say, but his real lack of either side of the ball has to do with it. Gomes’ last season in the association wasn’t a pretty one. He only averaged 2.3 points per game, and had a PER of 4.4. That was EIGHTH worst in the N.B.A. during the 2011-12 season. With the 30-year old coming back to the N.B.A, he’s really not expected to do anything. He’s going to be your token bench guy. I hope he’s ready to practice his bench celebrations, Bazemore style.

Despite how poorly he played in his last N.B.A. season, Gomes is really a three-point threat. He shot poorly that last season, but is a career 35.6 percent three-point shooter. He’s not overly efficient, averaging, 10.2 ppg for his career.  His offense really hasn’t been the bad thing about Gomes, it’s been his defense.

He’s been like an invisible guy on the defensive side of the ball. His defensive rating was never lower than a 107. (points allowed per 100 possessions). It’s almost as if you’re playing 4-on-5 when he’s on the court. That’s why if he was to have any success with the Thunder, it’ll be playing the cleanup role against other reserves.

I don’t expect Gomes to be a significant contributor to the Thunder this season, barring any injuries (knock on wood). He might even end up playing in Tulsa this season. Gomes being near the bottom of the #ThunderRank isn’t really a surprise. However, other players have come to the Thunder with very little expectations, and have done pretty well with their experience here; see Hasheem Thabeet.
